California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act (CalCare) – A bold, public-funded, “cradle-to-grave, head-to-toe” healthcare reform bill to replace the commercial, for-profit-only healthcare system and take control of healthcare away from companies like Pacifica Companies and political lobbyists like the California Association for Health Facilities (CAHF). Pacifica Companies Attacks Residents with 11 Staff Layoffs from Sakura ICF

11 Sakura ICF Staff Layoffs
Pacifica Companies’ Hypocrisy: There have been 11 staff layoffs at Sakura ICF in recent months

Following Pacifica Companies’ published desire to close the Sakura Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) in Boyle Heights, the ONLY facility of its kind for Japanese American and Japanese seniors in the entire United States, eleven staff have been laid off, including staff all important to the historically exceptionally high-quality bilingual and bi-cultural care that the facility has been known for.

This has occurred despite widespread opposition from the community, multiple elected officials and even the California Department of Public Health. Pacifica is continuing to do whatever they can to cut costs and push residents out of the facility to make way for more profitable high-rent housing.

Protest Against Boyle Hts Evictions laist.com - Josie Huang

Gated off from a main drag in Boyle Heights is a tranquil senior living campus with a glittering koi pond and the transportive name of Sakura Gardens. It’s a nod to the Japanese heritage of its residents and a reminder of a large Japanese American community that thrived in Boyle Heights before World War II.

It’s also the latest ground zero in L.A.’s unending saga of displacement playing out in a neighborhood too familiar with the pressures of gentrification.
