Save Our Seniors Network (SOSN) expresses its outrage and disappointment with Councilman Kevin de León’s direct involvement in the disturbing and offensive racist October 2021 meeting held in secret among Councilmembers Nury Martinez and Gilbert Cedillo, and labor leader Ron Herrera.
Since 2021, Councilman de León has supported and participated in several of SOSN’s major events advocating for bilingual, bicultural services and programs and against the eviction of 80, 90, and 100 year old Japanese American elderly in senior nursing facilities in Council District 14. However, due to the recent release of the recorded offensive and demeaning conversation, we can no longer respect and trust Councilman de León and the three individuals involved.
Racism, bigotry, homophobia, and religious prejudice committed by elected officials should never be tolerated or condoned. The resignations of labor leader Ron Herrera and Councilmember Nury Martinez are steps in the right direction. Councilmembers de León and Cedillo must also resign immediately in order for the City of LA to begin its critical journey to heal and repair from the reprehensible damage and harm caused by Councilmembers Martinez, de León, Cedillo, and labor leader Herrera.
